5 Key Features That Set Sophie’s Gasthaus Apart

1. Heritage Revival

Sophie’s Gasthaus is a former private estate turned hotel with a storied past, dating back to the early 1900s. The design team drew inspiration from the building’s heritage, seamlessly blending historic elements with modern aesthetics. Original German architectural features, such as exposed brick walls, reclaimed wooden beams, and ornate moldings, were carefully preserved and restored, paying tribute to the past while adding character to the space with original art pieces from West Chelsea Contemporary art gallery. Each of the gorgeously decorated rooms tell their own story, with vintage furnishings and curated artwork that represent the hotel’s roots.

2. Moody Elegance

One of the defining characteristics of Sophie’s Gasthaus is its moody ambiance. Dark, rich hues dominate the colors on the walls and furniture throughout, creating an atmosphere of sophistication and intrigue. Deep blues, velvety purples, and charcoal grays are accented by soft, warm lighting, casting a glow throughout the space. Plush fabrics and exciting textures add to the sense of luxury, inviting guests to relax and unwind in style. Whether you’re sipping cocktails in the lounge or sinking into the fresh luxury linens of your room, every moment at Sophie’s Gasthaus is infused with a sense of romance.

3. Eclectic Flair

Sophie’s Gasthaus embraces eclecticism, blending a diverse array of styles, textures, and influences into its design. Each room is a treasure trove of unique finds, from antique furnishings to contemporary art pieces. The eclectic mix of patterns, colors, and materials creates a sense of visual interest and keeps guests captivated at every turn. Quirky accents and unexpected details add a playful touch, inviting exploration and discovery. Whether you’re admiring the intricate tilework in the bathroom or cozying up with a book in a reading nook, there’s always something new to delight your senses at Sophie’s Gasthaus.

4. Nature-Inspired Elements

Despite its central-New-Braunfels location, Sophie’s Gasthaus is deeply connected to nature. Sophie’s is the only downtown hotel, with a large pool and beautifully landscaped courtyard with century old Magnolia trees. Indoor plants breathe life into the interior, filling the space with a sense of freshness. The interiors breathe life into every corner of the common spaces with plants and fresh florals. Whether you’re enjoying coffee in the shaded courtyard or floating in the pool, nature is always close by at Sophie’s Gasthaus.

Local experts reveal their best tips for a girlfriend getaway in New Braunfels

Guest Post: photo credit: New Braunfels Convention & Visitors Bureau

Three cultured, well-traveled women give their picks for a weekend of adventure and fun with your BFFs

The holidays are over and the warm days of summer are months away. It’s the perfect time to escape the winter doldrums with a girls’ weekend in New Braunfels.

This town in Central Texas is a one-of-a-kind combination of laid-back and sophisticated, rustic and luxe, Texas Hill Country and European culture. It’s the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable weekend of fun, pampering and exploration.

To make your adventure even easier, we’ve asked local experts for their best tips for a weekend of fun in New Braunfels. Read on for itinerary tips and must-do’s from three notable New Braunfels women.

Kat Balmos’ long weekend in New Braunfels

Kat Balmos is the owner of three boutiques in New Braunfels: The LocalLot 59, and Heritage Supply Co. Each offers an eclectic mix of artisan-made goods, apparel, accessories, books, art and gifts (be sure to add all three to your shopping itinerary).

Friday evening, enjoy dinner at the Huisache Grill, a quaint, cozy bistro with a regionally inspired menu. Then make a trip to Sidecar (reservations required), a dimly-lit underground speakeasy-style jazz club at the Prince Solms Inn for live music and cocktails.

Start the next day at the New Braunfels Farmers Market, where more than 60 vendors will tempt you with locally grown produce, flowers, baked goods, fresh cheeses, wines, eggs and more. It’s open year-round every Saturday morning, rain or shine.

Right next door is Krause’s Café, a German-themed taproom and restaurant with a Texas flair. Stop by for a mimosa before beginning a shopping odyssey downtown. Be sure to check out Max’s Haus MercantileAdele Kerr & Co., the Downtown Antique Mall and the Dancing Pony Boutique. In the afternoon, head to historic Gruene Hall to take in some live music as you soak up the ambiance of Texas’ oldest dance hall, which dates back to 1878. Be sure to check the calendar to see the lineup of shows – there’s live music daily here, from local heroes to national headliners.

When hunger strikes, head across the street to Mozie’s for drinks and dinner (specialties include sliders, dogs and whisky) in a casually elegant setting.

Sunday, it’s brunch with a Cajun twist at McAdoo’s Seafood & Oyster Bar, located in the beautifully restored historic Post Office building downtown. From there, head to beautiful Landa Park and indulge your inner child with a ride on the miniature train under the giant oak trees of the 51-acre grounds. If relaxing by the river is more your style, rent a riverside cabana at the Float In on the Comal, where you can enjoy food, drinks and watching the world go by.

When evening rolls around, it’s dinner, bowling and games at Downtown Social, where a full menu is served with a side of pool, ping pong, arcade games and more to make a few more memories before heading home on Monday.

It’s easy being Gruene for Crystal Kinman

Crystal Kinman is an events and promotions manager for the Gruene historic district in New Braunfels. She shares her recommendations with a warning: “One weekend may not be enough!”

Her ideal girls’ weekend would start in historic Gruene, Texas (naturally). This 15-acre settlement on the banks of the Guadalupe River is a National Historic District, with shops, restaurants and entertainment venues located within the walls of the original township buildings. For more than 30 years, Gruene Market Days has captivated shoppers one weekend a month with roughly 100 artisans displaying uniquely crafted items, along with live entertainment.

After working up a thirst, Gruene offers plenty of options to refresh yourself as you enjoy live music. Relax with a glass of wine under the oak trees at The Grapevine, with wines from more than 25 Texas wineries, other New World wines and curated craft beer. Or whet your whistle at the Gristmill Restaurant & Bar for jalapeno margaritas in a historic building overlooking the

Guadalupe River. Stay at the Gristmill for a true Texas experience at dinner, with an extensive menu, roaring fireplaces and turn-of-the-century architecture.

The next day, rejuvenate your body and mind with a class at Laurel Grace Yoga, a downtown studio. Then stroll to 2Tarts Bakery for fresh coffee, pastries or breakfast items.

Spend an afternoon exploring downtown’s many independently-owned shops and boutiques, then wander over to the historic Black Whale Pub for a signature Bloody Mary, craft beer and munchies or a meal from their full kitchen. Or maybe try dinner at Muck & Fuss, a lively spot serving chef-inspired burgers and nearly 40 beers on tap (and, because this is New Braunfels, live music too).

Add some adventure to your weekend with a nighttime kayak float on the Comal River with PaddleTx. This outfitter offers evening floats in glass-bottomed boats lit by LED lights to experience the river in a whole new way.

Jennifer Singleterry’s picks for a memorable weekend

Jennifer Singleterry knows a few things about New Braunfels. As the executive director of the Sophienburg Museum & Archives, Singleterry helps share the city’s history since its founding in 1845, when German immigrants settled along the banks of the Comal River. Here are her additions to a weekend with BFFs:

Start with breakfast or lunch at Buttermilk Café for comfort food with an upscale twist. You’ll be properly fueled up for a scenic hike at Panther Canyon. Landa Park is home to the trailhead for this 1.6-mile hike that takes you over more than 49 acres of natural terrain. Later, plan on a drive on River Road, an inspiring, scenic 11-mile drive that follows the Guadalupe River between New Braunfels and Canyon Lake Dam.

Lodging options that blend history, charm and luxury

For lodging, our experts recommend a couple of options particularly well-suited to an adventure with girlfriends. Sophie’s Gasthaus is an impeccably decorated 8-room luxury boutique hotel in

downtown New Braunfels, just off Main Plaza (the hot tub is a great place to unwind after your fun-filled days). Gruene Mansion Inn is located on the Guadalupe River, a short walk to everything historic Gruene has to offer. Lodging options here include century-old barns and homes restored to Victorian rustic elegance (several rooms have their own fireplaces).

Your Guide to a Romantic Holiday Weekend Trip in New Braunfels, TX

guest post by Endless Brunch

A winter evening strolling hand in hand with your significant other under the twinkling lights around the historic district of New Braunfels, TX is a magical start to the perfect weekend getaway in Texas. My husband and I just took a trip to this little Texas town and loved every minute of it! The festive atmosphere combined with the quaint allure of antique shops, boutique treasures, and exquisitely decorated corners made for a fabulous trip.
During the Christmas season, you’ll find that every street corner is the perfect backdrop for your romantic holiday adventure. So let’s get planning! This is your guide to the perfect holiday getaway with your boo complete with all of the festive things to do, places to eat and drink, and where to stay in New Braunfels, TX.

Must-Do Holiday Activities in New Braunfels
When my husband and I decided to book a weekend in New Braunfels, I’d read about the boutiques and antiques, but I was blown away by how many things there are to do there! During the holiday season every store, restaurant, and sidewalk corner is decorated in garlands, bows, and glistening lights. Below are a few activities that my husband and I enjoyed on our recent trip that I think you’ll love.

See a Holiday Show at Brauntex Theatre
The Brauntex Theatre has been a centerpiece of downtown New Braunfels since it opened in January 1942 as a movie theater. The gem of downtown New Braunfels offers an array of shows including music, comedy, and musicals. During the holiday season, they have a variety of Christmas-themed performances, so check the event schedule to get tickets when you visit New Braunfels!
Plus, the theatre has a full bar with cocktails, wines, and beers. For the holidays, you can try one of the seasonal cocktails like Winter Sangria, a rum cocktail called Santa’s Hat, or Cranberry Mimosas! Shop Brauntex tickets here.
Shop Local Boutiques, Antiques, and More!
Shopping is always a good idea, but it’s truly an essential activity during the holidays. My husband and I shopped all over the New Braunfels historic district and Gruene. We loved popping into the various local stores to get our Christmas shopping done.
Stroll through town and discover a variety of treasures. We couldn’t believe how many offer a range of Christmas ornaments, gift ideas for food and drink connoisseurs, and quality clothes.
We bought a couple of ornaments at Heritage Supply and The Local. I also got the cutest Christmas sweatshirt at Local. (I’ll be wearing it for the rest of the season, sorry!) The Local and Lot 59 had so many Christmas pillows I wanted to take home for myself, but I couldn’t buy it all. Heritage Supply had beautiful candles, leather goods, and stunning glassware and more. Dan got himself a great button down that he wore to brunch the next day. Also, they offer customers walking around the store a glass of bubbly on the weekends! Henne Hardware, the oldest running hardware store in Texas had amazing items from teak wood furniture to well crafted candles.
Here are a few other stores in New Braunfels that we loved: Got Toys, River Rose, Downtown Antique Mall, Staunch Traditional Outfitters, and Dancing Pony Staunch.

Drive to Historic Gruene, TX
Gruene, TX is a 10-minute drive from Sophie’s Gasthaus where you will enjoy shopping, dining and music for the evening. We easily found free parking right across from Gruene Hall, and there’s plenty of street parking. Once parked, everything is walkable, and you’ll fall in love. The National Historic District of Gruene has been resisting change since 1872. It’s incredible to walk through the general stores and enjoy drinks and dancing in the iconic Gruene Dance Hall.

While we were in Gruene, we walked around and finished shopping for everyone on our Christmas gift list. Gruene has 30 one-of-kind shops! They have a store for everything from holiday decorations and knick knacks to high end art shops and boutiques.
When you’re done shopping, discover more holiday magic in Gruene by getting a photo with Cowboy Kringle, catch a holiday-themed show at Gruene Hall, find the largest selection of Texas wine at The Grapevine, or cozy up to one of the fireplaces in the historic Gristmill for a savory meal and marvel at the gorgeous upside down Christmas tree in the original dining area!

Where to Eat & Drink in New Braunfels
In my opinion, indulging in food and drinks is the best part of a weekend getaway, and it’s even better when you can share the experience with someone you love. During our weekend in New Braunfels, we enjoyed a variety of delicious meals and tantalizing cocktails. Below are our favorites!
Alpine Haus
Before we moved to Texas, I had no idea how influential German culture was in Texas. Many of the first settlers in Texas were German, so you’ll find strong German influences in several Texas Towns. New Braunfels is no exception, so we had to try dinner at the Alpine Haus. It reminded my husband and I so much of our travels in France along the German and Swiss borders, like Colmar and Annecy. The food at Alpine Haus specializes in Bavarian-style cooking with influences from Germany,   Austria and Switzerland. We enjoyed German beer, black forest ham and brie, and a delicious schnitzel while listening to a dynamic accordion player!

Downtown Social
If you’re looking for a Sunday Funday brunch, Downtown Social is the place to go. It’s a unique dining establishment complete with bowling alleys, shuffleboard, an arcade room, and more. We had so much fun playing games, sipping mimosas, and enjoying the fried pickles. (Make sure you try their jalapeno ranch. It’s like crack dip. So good!)
In the evenings, Downtown Social turns into an even livelier party! Check out their schedule for upcoming events and DJs. It’s perfect spot to have a drink, watch sunday football, and play games.

McAdoo’s Seafood & Oyster Bar
Located in the historic post office in Downtown New Braunfels, McAdoo’s Seafood Company offers a beautiful backdrop for dinner or brunch. The tall ceilings, stunning bar, and botanical garden on the outdoor patio were breathtaking. The details pay homage to the historical elements of the post office.
The menu is full of Texas Creole favorites, authentic Cajun specialties and fresh seafood. My husband and I went for brunch, have been telling everyone we meet how delicious it was! We enjoyed fresh oysters from Prince Edward Island, a bottle of French champagne, seafood fondue, salmon, and crab cake benedict. Yes, we went all out, but everything we tried was phenomenal. When you visit, the seafood fondue is a must-order dish. It’s a blend of seafood, white wine, and cheese served on fresh garlic bread. I wasn’t convinced until the first bite, but I think it changed my life.
Also, the bloody mary bar at McAdoo’s brunch has everything a bloody mary fan would want–8 kinds of tomato juices, a tree of garnishes, and pickles, mixings, and more.

Sidecar
Located in the heart of New Braunfels (next door to Muck & Fuss), this  dimly-lit, underground sanctuary is a place where the casual and the  professional cocktail connoisseur come to unwind. When you walk down the steps and walk into Sidecar, you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Pictures of old hollywood celebrities adorn the walls while jazz musicians fill the room with sultry music. In the back room pipes and cigars are displayed along the walls, and even the bathroom has bits of history.
On top of the intimate ambiance, the libations are remarkable. Every drink is mixed with fresh seasonal ingredients and classic spirits. My husband and I enjoyed multiple cocktails while we listened to the musicians mixing Christmas songs and other classic tunes. I’d recommend booking a reservation – the weekends get busy! Book reservations here.

Where to Stay in New Braunfels
When it comes to a romantic getaway, where you stay sets the tone for the trip. We stayed at the enchanting Sophie’s Gasthaus, a luxury boutique hotel that’s walking distance to all of the activities we enjoyed in New Braunfels and just a short drive to Gruene and the Comal & Guadalupe rivers.
The property is newly renovated with moody, art gallery inspired designs. The hotel has several rooms and suites, each uniquely decorated. We stayed in the Seele Suite which has two queen beds and a twin size trundle. View the individual rooms and suites at Sophie’s Gasthaus here.
Not only is the decor of this hotel fabulous, we loved all the touching little details. Sophie’s Gasthaus really thought of everything! In our bathroom, they had every toiletry you would want or need: face masks, under eye masks, makeup remover, razors, toothbrushes with toothpaste, and more. The room had wine glasses and a corkscrew if you want to enjoy a night in the room. And the coffee nook had several flavored syrups; oat, almond, and regular milks, biscotti, snack bars, and more. I was so impressed!
We wished we knew about this gorgeous hotel when we were planning our Hill Country wedding. The photo ops would be fabulous! If you’re interested in booking the entire property for an event or wedding, you can! Just ask them.
